My professional path initially led me into the medical supplies industry, a domain where I acquired invaluable insights into healthcare operations and the multifaceted needs of an aging populace. However, a pivotal moment, profoundly emotionally compelling, occurred during a routine visit to an assisted living facility. It was there that I discerned a significant opportunity to transcend existing standards of senior care. I envisioned an environment offering truly superior services and amenities, mirroring the profound care and respect I held for my own parents.

My commitment was unequivocal: to treat every senior with unwavering respect, dignity, integrity, and compassion. Driven by this powerful inspiration, I made a transformative decision in 2012, divesting my successful multi-million-dollar medical equipment business to wholly dedicate myself to this nascent vision. of senior living regulations, encompassing detailed licensing processes, varying local zoning laws, and municipal approvals, presented a complex hurdle. Overcoming early negativity and skepticism was also a significant barrier, as was managing intricate project timelines and coordinating numerous contractors, which posed considerable operational complexities.

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, however, presented an extraordinary and multifaceted challenge, demanding rapid and comprehensive adaptation of safety protocols and the swift implementation of innovative solutions for resident care and communication. The industry continues to grapple with ongoing challenges such as labor shortages and wage pressures, alongside the persistent need for comprehensive staff training.

A current challenge involves effectively integrating our philosophy of creating a nurturing atmosphere with the realities of the available worker pool. Furthermore, rising development costs and a tightening lending environment continue to present significant headwinds.

Through these experiences, I learned the critical importance of distinguishing between setbacks genuinely beyond my control due to external factors and those that could be rectified through focused effort, perseverance, and a continuous willingness to adapt, learn, and improve. These challenges unequivocally reinforced the imperative for resilience and strategic planning, enabling Build Senior Living to emerge stronger and better prepared for future crises. Our long-term aspiration is to become the largest privately owned assisted living company in the U.S., actively transforming senior living environments and establishing new industry benchmarks for excellence. Our core area of service is exclusively the development and operation of premier senior living housing, specializing in assisted living and memory care communities under the esteemed Hampton Manor brand. Notably, Build Senior Living operates without central headquarters, as I prefer to operate directly within the communities we have created, fostering a hands-on, community-embedded approach.

How has the company evolved under your leadership in terms of scale, and innovation, or culture?

Since our Inception in 2012, BSL has experienced significant accelerated growth. This expansion is a direct result of our ability to “copy-paste” what works, identifying successful operational models and replicating them efficiently across new locations. We have successfully completed 39 communities to date, with a current pipeline encompassing assisted living and memory care communities strategically located across six states: Florida, Texas, Missouri, Illinois, Virginia, and Michigan.

For instance, in the Detroit metropolitan area alone, BSL operates over 19 premier assisted living communities, serving more than 2,100 senior residents. By early 2023, we had developed and either sold or managed over 30 thriving communities, with a projected goal of nearly 40 by the end of 2025. This rapid, yet sustainable, expansion underscores our mastery of strategic implementation.

We have fundamentally transformed traditional industry practices by establishing a hospitality-focused model for senior living. BSL proactively revitalizes our existing communities to consistently meet the evolving needs and preferences of today’s seniors. Looking ahead, Build Senior Living has ambitious short- and long-term goals. In the short term, ongoing construction projects are advancing in Texas, Missouri, and Michigan, with nine additional communities underway in the Detroit and surrounding areas, slated for completion in 2025 and 2026.

This trajectory positions BSL to reach a projected milestone of nearly 40 communities by the end of 2025, demonstrating the success of our “copy-paste” growth strategy. Our long-term goals are equally compelling. We aim to continue strategic and sustainable expansion across the United States, with the ambitious goal of establishing Build Senior Living as the largest privately owned assisted living company in the country.

Among our upcoming projects, construction of Hampton Manor of Madison Township, Michigan – an 84-unit, 70,00 square foot luxury assisted living facility – began last September and is expected to be completed by late 2025. Another senior living center is also taking shape in Crowley, a southern suburb of Texas.

I envision a future characterized by even more hospitality-focused living environments, with a greater emphasis on leisure, wellness, and personalized experiences. The continuous strategic integration of cutting-edge technology to enhance both resident care and operational efficiency remains a key focus. I am deeply committed to continuously adapting BSL’s model to effectively meet the evolving needs of the seniors we serve.
